Two Mule Skinners approach the Bright Angel Trailhead after a long day on the very hot and dusty trail that began at Phantom Ranch on the North side of the Colorado River at the bottom of the Canyon. After a long ride down, an over night stay at Phantom, the lead rider looks back to check on her Mule Train behind and let’s her partner know we’re “almost there”.

Looking south on the North

Kaibab Trail into Roaring Springs Canyon a white Mule is a striking sight. Several can be seen on the Mule Trains from time to time. Further down the trail, past the point where the Mule rides stop is Roaring Springs, an impressive water falls that supplies both

Canyon Rims with water and

hydro electric power.

Before daybreak, the Mule Skinners are hard at work preparing the Mule Train for it’s return out of the Canyon from Phantom Ranch. The well known rock coral sits in the middle of Phantom ranch with the ever present Mule Deer strolling by. With a billion stars overhead in the October, Southern sky, the riders are anxious to get started on their

“long day ahead”.

Horses are generally used for Havasupai Canyon, in the western region of the Grand Canyon, instead of Mules to transport nearly everything to and from

Supai Village. Ruby stands on the rim waiting,

at the Hilltop Trailhead, to make the next trip

into the Canyon.

After a days work on the North Kaibab trail, the venerable Mules, also known as the Grand Canyon “Taxi”, leaves their passengers behind and heads along the rim to their home coral. With a lightened load and the coolness of the North Rim….life is good.

The Mule Skinner shouts…

“Git up !”
